Congratulations to Steve Backley who won an historic fourth javelin
gold medal at the European Athletics Championships 6-11th August 2002
Munich, Olympic Stadium.

In 1990 in the Yugoslavian resort of Split, he won the European javelin title for the first time with a throw of 87.30m. In 1994 in the Finnish capital of Helsinki, he retained the title with 85.20m. In 1998 in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, he completed his hat-trick with 89.72m. In 2002, with a throw of 88.54m in round 5, Steve completed a unique achievement of four European Gold Medals. With the added knowledge that all the World's best throwers are within Europe now that all that remains is to improve that golf swing...
